When a funeral home signs its staff up for CPR certification the joke pretty much writes itself, "By the time they get to you isn't it a little late for CPR?" But the idea behind Mueller Memorial Funeral Home and Cremation hiring a Basic Life Support (BLS) instructor isn't for the decedent, but rather for their survivors.
Anne Meyer, office manager of the White Bear Lake funeral home and former CPR instructor, had the idea that the staff get certified. Her thought was, so many people of all ages, abilities, and conditions come through our doors for arrangements, visitations, and funerals it only makes sense that we be prepared for an emergency.
Becoming CPR certified took on special significance as one of the Mueller staff prepared to have heart valve replacement surgery. The decision was made to get training on the schedule and February, being American Heart Month, seemed a perfect time.
The task to find an instructor fell to Communication Director, Taelor Johnson who maintains her CPR certification biannually as a non-practicing registered dental hygienist. She made arrangements with In-Pulse CPR, a company from whom she had received training in the past, who are authorized by the American Heart Association (AHA) to provide public and private BLS training and certification.
Mueller staff members were also encouraged to invite a significant other, roommate, or friend because Mueller Memorial is very interested in having someone trained ready to intervene if one of our team experiences an emergency outside of the workplace.
So, at 3pm on Tuesday February 21st 2023 the staff gathered with In-Pulse instructor Caleb Smithberg for a four-hour training session made up of seminar, workbook, practical instruction, and skills testing. The procedure for trained individuals administering CPR is 30 compressions and 2 rescue breaths, at a compression of 100-120 beats per minute. That’s like the rhythm of the songs “Stayin’ Alive,” “The Imperial March” from Star Wars, Beyonce’s “Crazy In Love”, or “Another One Bites the Dust”, though the latter seems a little too morbid for the situation.
Other key takeaways, are that early activation of emergency services and early intervention with an automated external defibrillator (AED) are critical, and to prioritize quality compressions rather than fixating on breaths.
The Mueller Memorial funeral home staff ended the evening certified in choking intervention for adults of all sizes, children, and infants; administering one person and team CPR for adults, children, and infants; as well as use of an AED.
Lingering supply chain issues are making purchase of an AED challenging right now, but Mueller Memorial plans to have an AED at our funeral homes in St. Paul and White Bear Lake as soon as we’re able.
Learning CPR is a gift you can give to the people around you and is another way we can serve the many families and visitors who are often here in a high emotional stress situation. Know that if you’re with us and an emergency strikes, the staff at Mueller Memorial is ready.
