Joan Lucille Schuster (Horrisberger)

LIFE STORY Joan Lucille Schuster (nee Horrisberger) Joan was born in St. Paul, Minnesota on June 30, 1928. She was one of eight children to Emma (nee Wackerfuss) and Ordwin Horrisberger. She attended St. John’s Lutheran Grade School and later attended Harding High School. As a young adult, she was working at West Publishing where she met the love of her life, Daniel Maxwell Schuster. The two were married at Sacred Heart Parish on May 24, 1947. They raised 6 daughters and one son together in their home on the Eastside of St. Paul. Joan dedicated her life to her children and being a mother. Outside of family, she was a devoted member and volunteer at Sacred Heart Parish. She was a part of the Altar and Rosary Society as well as the Home School Association. Joan was a true matriarch and led the family with determination and love. One of the most memorable things about Joan was her “Saturday Morning Coffee” routine. She always had a pot of coffee on and many friends, family, and neighbors would stop by on Saturday mornings. She had this routine for over 40 years. As a mom of seven kids, she undoubtedly became a great sewer and cook. She was known for her wonderful home cooked meals and always cooked up a big dinner on Sunday evenings. Not only a great cook, she was a phenomenal hostess when people were over. In addition to her busy life at home, she was very involved in the family Income Tax preparation business for many years, eventually becoming part owner with her brother. She thoroughly enjoyed meeting people and helping them with their taxes. After her husband retired, the two were able to travel the world with some memorable trips. Some of their favorites were to the UK, Las Vegas, Boston, and Hawaii. In their later years, she became a big Minnesota Twins Baseball fan and would call her children to chat about the games. One of her favorite things to do was join her family and friends going to the casino so she could play bingo. Although described as a pretty take charge German woman, it did not stop her from being a caring grandmother and wanting to know everything about her grandchildren’s lives. Her family was her pride and joy. For the last three years, Joan was living at Marian Care Center in St. Paul. Just a week before she passed away, she and her family were cared for by the loving staff of Our Lady of Peace Hospice Home in St. Paul. Joan passed away on the evening of April 17, 2018 with her family by her side. She is preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Daniel Maxwell Schuster; her parents, Emma and Ordwin Horrisberger; her great-granddaughter, Emma Raye; her sister; and her five brothers.
