Herbert Thomas Alberg
World War II Veteran. Age 90 of Vadnais Heights. Herb passed away peacefully March 4, 2014. Beloved spouse, father, grandparent. Preceded in death by loving wife, Charlotte. Survived by daughters, Barbara (Mark Brewer) and Debra (Jeffrey Kohen); grandchildren, Laura Piotrowski, Holly Paseka, Christy Piotrowski, Thomas and Elizabeth Kohen; and brother, Jack Alberg. Herb attended Humboldt HS. At 19 he was assigned to the 247thth Combat Engineers Battalion. On June 5th, 1944 he left Cardiff aboard the Susan B. Anthony headed for Omaha Beach, Normandy. After his ship was sunk by a mine, a passing LCI landed him on Utah Beach. His company continued to St. Mere Eglise, Cherbourg and Bastogne (Battle of the Bulge). His tour ended in Berlin. He attended the U of MN, and married Charlotte Eschbach. He worked at Montgomery Ward and First National Bank of St. Paul, retiring at 58 as Vice-President of International Banking. He survived a fatal car crash and a debilitating stroke. He was a man of nine lives, having a constitution for survival. His passion was his family and grandchildren. A celebration of life will be held Thursday, March, 27 at Shepherd of the Hills Church, 3920 Victoria St. N., Shoreview, 55126. Visitation 5:30pm , Service 6:30pm.
