Helen A. Petersen
Helen A. Petersen, 95, Cook, former longtime resident of White Bear Lake & St. Paul, passed away at Cook Nursing Home on Tuesday, January 27, 2015. She was born Helen Anne Groshel on January 7, 1920 at Eveleth, to Frank and Helen (Drager) Groshel. She grew up in Eveleth and graduated from Chisholm High School in 1938. Helen moved to St. Paul, where she met and married Arthur Petersen on July 18, 1942. Helen worked at the ammunition plant in New Brighton, making shells for the War effort during World War II. After Arthur’s honorable Army discharge, the couple settled in St. Paul in 1946, where they raised their family and lived for over 40 years and was a member of St. Mary of the Lake Catholic Church in White Bear Lake. She worked as a waitress at The Lexington Restaurant in St. Paul for 22 years. After Arthur’s death in 1966, she moved to Vadnais Heights. She took great delight in vacationing with family and friends. Her travels took her to many states and countries. Her family fondly recalls her being “one busy lady.” Even in her later years, she liked her weekly golf outings and in her 80’s enjoyed her twice weekly aerobics class. She is preceded in death by her husband, Arthur in 1966; a grandson, Steven Luecken; 4 brothers, Frank, Harry, John, and Floyd Groshel. Helen is survived by 1 son, Ridgely Peterson of Vadnais Heights, MN; 2 daughters, Glorie (Robert) Luecken of Orr and Phyllis (Roland) Krauss of Redmond, WA; 4 cherished grandchildren: Paul (Twila) Luecken, Jason (Amy) Luecken, Christine (George) Krauss-Sell and Briggan Krauss; 3 cherished great-grandchildren: Nicholas Luecken, Annika Krauss-Sell and Phoebe Luecken; along with numerous nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service will be held at Mueller Mortuary on May 20, 2015 at 10:00 AM. Brunch to follow and interment at Fort Snelling National Cemetery next to her husband, Arthur.
