Evelyn Irene Monson (Sutton)
Passed Away at Age 91
On March 29, 2015
Evelyn was born to Duncan-Edward and Bertha (Zellmer) Sutton on September 11, 1923 at home in Clear Lake, Wisconsin. She was the third of five children and grew up on the Sutton family farm in the Amery Wisconsin area. She spoke fondly of life on the farm and milking Topsy the cow. Evelyn attended Red Bridge, East Lincoln and Amery High School; she was a good student with high grades and a knack for writing poetry.
Evelyn caught Oscar’s eye at the Tiperary Dance Hall by Deer Lake, Wisconsin. The morning after they met he went to work and told his co-worker, Loren, “I met the most beautiful girl in the world last night, and I’m going to marry her”. And he did…They began their 62 year marriage in Stillwater, Minnesota on October 12, 1940, and raised their family in Scandia. Their four boys kept Evelyn busy, always finding new ways to keep her entertained and on her toes. She would reminisce fondly about their antics, always keeping a straight face at the time, yet enjoying those memories for so many years afterwards.
For more than forty years the family vegetable stand was a fixture along highway 95 in Scandia, with generations of families recalling stopping there to buy fresh produce. Evelyn loved to garden, as well as deer hunt, bake, play cards and can fruits and vegetables from the gardens. She also worked outside the home for many years at Andersen Windows.
Evelyn’s delightful sense of humor and steadfast love of her family endeared her to many. She worked hard to raise her sons to be good men, quietly raising the bar high and not tolerating “foolishness”. We are all thankful to have had her in our lives and will never forget her beautiful smile and the twinkle in her eye.
Evelyn is preceded in death by her husband, Oscar; her great-grandson, Aidan; and her siblings, Violet, Ellen and Robert.
Evelyn is survived by her sons, Vincent (Cynthia), Dale (Carol), Gerald (Mary) and James (Suzanne); her eleven grandchildren, Jay and Beth Monson, Chad and Liz Monson, Jodi Monson and Nate Markell, Bob and Laura Anderson, Bill and Karri Anderson, Dan and Anabel Monson, Mike Monson, Chris and Katherine Leibel, Alexander Monson, Chris Monson and Robert Monson and her twenty-one great-grandchildren, Katrina Monson, Cole Monson, Alicia Monson, Lydia Monson, Kate Keller, Karter Keller, Grant Monson, Kody Keller, Monica Monson, Mitch Monson, Lincoln Anderson, Abram Anderson, Reagan Anderson, Gabrielle Monson, Alexander Monson, Carly Monson, Isabella Monson, Avery Monson, Sterling Monson, Ruby Monson and Fiona Leibel..
