Emmet Patrick Hughes 91, of White Bear Lake, MN Passed away on January 6th, 2015 at Pillars Hospice House in Oakdale, MN. Emmet was born on August 27, 1923 in Duluth, MN to Patrick and Katherine Hughes. Emmet was the middle of three children: Rose, Emmet, and Patricia (Trisha.) Emmet enlisted in the United States Army and served in World War II. Following the war, Emmet enrolled in the University of Minnesota, Duluth and graduated Magna Cum Laude in just three years with a degree in Business. Emmet fell in love with a friend of his sister Trisha, and married Dorothy Ann Green in 1950. Emmet was a career railroad man for the Northern Pacific/Burlington Northern. The Hughes family moved following Emmet’s work, living in Duluth, Minnesota; Helena, Montana; Seattle, Washington and finally settling in White Bear Lake, MN. Emmet and Dorothy had four children: Katherine Ann, Robert Emmet, Charles Michael and Thomas Patrick. In their retirement, Emmet and Dorothy enjoyed time in Tucson, Arizona but returned to White Bear Lake. Emmet loved to golf, watching car racing and was a regular watcher of the Friday night boxing matches! An avid motorcyclist, he lived a full life, riding up until age 86! His longevity was a blessing for his family. Emmet was preceded in death by parents, Patrick and Katherine, and his sisters, Rose and Trisha. Emmet is survived by his beloved wife, Dorothy, sister-in-law Sister Mary Lawrence, and his four children: Kathy Sandberg (Nalani McCutcheon), Bob (Jodie) Hughes, Chuck (Joni) Hughes, and Tom (Jody) Hughes; nine grandchildren: John Sandberg, Shelly (BJ) Cole, Patrick Hughes, Jake Hughes, Molly Hughes, Megan (Adam) Rini, Kaitlin Hughes, Kaija (Eric)Younger and Nick Wilson; five great-grandchildren: Ayden Cole, Isabelle Cole, Madilyn Cole, Amelie Youngner, and Linden Youngner. Funeral services will be held at St. Pius X Catholic Church on Tuesday, January 13, 2015 at 11:30 A.M with Visitation one Hour prior to Mass.
