Doris Marie Zangs (nee Goeltl)
Age 91 of Saint Paul, passed away peacefully on November 19, 2020. Born December 6, 1928. Doris was one of three children born to Ella (nee Brunner) and Lawrence Goeltl and grew up in the Frogtown neighborhood of St. Paul, attending St. Agnes Catholic Church and School. After high school, Doris worked at St. Paul Fire Marine Insurance Company (now known as Travelers Insurance). Doris learned to play the piano and was able to save money to buy her own piano which she treasured throughout her life. Will remember always, her playing the piano and singing.
She met the love of her life, Albert âDickâ Zangs. They were married at St. Agnes Church on April 4, 1951 and moved into the upper unit of her parentâs duplex on Edmund Avenue, where she was raised as a child. After their first son was born in 1952, Doris became a stay at home mom. Doris and Dick had six children while living in the duplex. With their expanding family, in August of 1960, they purchased their first home located on Saint Paulâs Eastside and had three more children. Doris and Dick were members of Sacred Heart Parish, later attending St. Patrickâs Catholic Church. The family was the center of their life and they made sure to give them the best experiences they could. They took trips to the Black Hills of South Dakota, to Mackinac Island Michigan, to the cabin at Lake Amelia (near Glenwood Minnesota) and many trips to Duluth. Once Doris had grandchildren, she and dad would take them on mini trips âcloserâ to home such as getting ice cream down in Lake City. During the holidays, Doris and Dick would not leave one space of the house undecorated. In fact, their Christmas décor could put any department store display to shame. Doris loved to crochet and made afghans for every family member and close friend. She also enjoyed reading, spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren, and being with her younger sister Shirley. Doris was a very faith filled and religious woman. Her world revolved around God and her family. She had a sweet personality that will be missed by all who knew her.
Doris is preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Albert âDickâ Zangs; her parents, Lawrence and Ella Goeltl; brother, Lawrence Goeltl; and her sister and best friend Shirley Heilman. She is survived by her children, Larry (Lisa), Denise (Brad) Cornell, Shelley (Tom) Lunzer, Bob (Patrice), Dan (Patty), Mary (Tom) Cain, Mark (Angie), Marlene (Frank) Ballis, David (Shelly); and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, relatives and friends.
Due to Covid-19 guidelines, the Zangs family will be having a private, family Mass of Christian Burial.
