DENNIS ARLYN SMITH

Dennis was born at his home in Spring Valley, Wisconsin on May 4, 1939 to Lucille (nee Peters) and Donald Smith. His parents raised him in Wisconsin and he attended Elmwood High School. Following high school, he enlisted in the United States Army where he served for over 6 years. He met the love of his life, Beverly Jeanne Schwabel, after his sister, Kathy, introduced the two of them. They were married on January 22, 1960. Dennis was dedicated to his high labor job in construction and he proudly helped to build the City Center building in Minneapolis and the Town Center in St. Paul. When he was not working, he was involved with the Independent Order of the Odd Fellows. He enjoyed being outdoors and worked around his home in Denmark Township. He loved to fish, hunt, play cribbage, work on cars, and ride his many motorcycles. His favorite hobby was horseshoes and could often be found at the Moose Lodge in Maplewood playing.
Dennis passed away peacefully at his daughterâs home on Friday, April 15, 2016. He is preceded in death by his parents, Lucille and Donald; his wife, Beverly Smith; his daughter, Robin Smith; his granddaughters, Brittany Smith and Heather Betancourt; his grandson, Dylan Smith; his great-grandson, Jaxson LaShomb; and his brother, Donavan Smith. He will be dearly loved and missed by his children, Kimberley (Bob) Gross of St. Paul, Tamera (Tony) Vogt of Cottage Grove, Todd (Shelly) Smith of Eagan, and Scott (Elva) Smith of Hastings; 15 grandchildren, Shannon Horton, Stacy Horton, Stephanie Horton, Dominic Betancourt, Kelley (Paul) Escobar, Angela Betancourt, Steven Betancourt, Anthony Vogt, Desiree Smith, Cameron Smith, Chelsea Smith, Scott Smith Jr., Marina Smith, Savanna Smith, and Santana Smith; 13 great-grandchildren; sister, Kathleen (Bob) Zollman; and many other family and friends.
There will be a gathering for friends and family on Friday, April 22, 2016 from 3:00-7:00PM at Mueller Memorial, 835 Johnson Parkway, St. Paul. There will be a second visitation from 10:00-11:00AM on Saturday, April 23, 2016 at the funeral home with a service to celebrate Dennis' life at 11:00AM. A luncheon will immediately follow the service with Magnolia's catering. There will be a formal procession leaving the funeral home at 12:45PM to go to Acacia Park Cemetery for military funeral honors at 1:15PM.
